If you’ve just purchased an Add-In for Enterprise Architect and need to get it up and running, this guide will walk you through exactly how to register it—without any fluff or technical jargon. Whether you’re using a standard Sparx EA license key or a floating key via the Sparx Systems Floating License Server, we’ve got both methods covered.
What’s a Sparx EA Add-In, and Why Do You Need to Register It?
Sparx EA provides support for add-ins and third party extensions that extend EA’s capabilities with integrations, automation tools, or industry-specific capabilities. You will need to have a valid license key to use such add-ins with the Enterprise Architect.
There are two ways to do this:
- Standard License – used by individual users.
- Floating License – managed centrally through a Sparx Systems Floating License Server, often used by teams.
Let’s start with the most common setup: using a standard license.

Registering an Add-In Using a Standard Sparx EA License
This is the go-to method when you’ve purchased an Add-In for personal or standalone use with a Standard Sparx EA license. Here’s how to do it:
Before You Start
Make sure you have:
- Installed the Add-In using its setup program.
- Got the Enterprise Architect license key from the provider (you’ll usually receive it by email).
Step-by-Step
1. Open Enterprise Architect.
2. Go to the top ribbon and navigate to: Start > Help > Register

3. In the License Management window, click Add Key.

4. In the window that pops up, you’ll see a tab labeled Enter Private Key.

5. Paste your Enterprise Architect Standard License key exactly as provided and click OK to confirm.

6. Close and restart Enterprise Architect. This reloads the system and finalizes the Add-In integration.
7. Once you’ve restarted Enterprise Architect, your Add-In should be active and ready to use.

Registering an Add-In Using a Floating License (via Sparx Floating License Server)
If your team uses a floating licensing setup, you’ll need to pull the key from your organization’s Sparx Systems Floating License Server. This will help your IT admins manage EA Floating Licenses centrally and make activations easier for new users.
Note: This only works on Enterprise Architect version 11 or higher.
How To Do It?
1. Open EA and navigate to: Start > Help > Register.
2. In the License Management window, click Add Key, then choose Get Shared Key.

3. Enter your name and company in the appropriate fields.
4. Click the three dots next to the Shared Keystore field.

5. In the dialog that opens:
- Select Sparx Systems Keystore Server.
- Enter the Server Address.
- If needed, input the password provided by your admin.
- Click Test to check the connection.

6. Once connected, select the Add-In from the product list.

7. Click OK.
8. The license will appear in your list of registered keys.
9. Hit Close, then restart Enterprise Architect to finish setup.
Once you’re back in, your Add-In should be fully licensed and ready to go using your Enterprise Architect floating license.
Things to Keep in Mind When Registering Sparx EA Licenses
- If you’re using the floating license keys, make sure you’re running EA version 11 or later.
- Always restart EA after registering any key—this reloads your Add-In properly.
- If you’re unsure about your Sparx Systems Floating License Server details, check with your system admin.
- MDG Add-In Licenses follow the same process depending on whether they are standard or floating.
